Can I Save Her?

Reading the prose of my past
like tapping into another’s existence
words of a girl I hardly remember
one falling in and out of love, in and out of consciousness.
Drugs deluded her mind as she reached out
for someone to make everything okay,
a place in the world that would shelter her.
Words on a page tell of hopes shattered,
weave together a past I have yet to comprehend
Tried so hard to forget her,
yet in her weakness I find familiarity
In her sad tales I’m taken back –
transported to a confusing time,
wish I could reach out my hand to save her,
let her know the mistakes she’s making.
Yet if those errors were erased
would life and all its joys be mine to take?
Gratitude only comes through trials,
or so I convince my mind.
