You are “the one” but not in the way I once thought,
you are not my soul mate, not “the one” I am meant to spend the rest of my life with.
You are the one who helped me learn so many life lessons,
lessons I needed to learn to become the woman I am today,
lessons that I am still uncovering and embracing years later.
You are the one who taught me how to think before I speak,
something I have not mastered entirely, but am working on.
You are the one who taught me to never settle for mistreatment,
to never allow disrespect, that no matter how mad two people get,
being mean and hurtful isn’t love.
You are the one who taught me to enjoy the journey,
that the journey is what life is about,
and is so much more beautiful than the destination.
You are the one who taught me that chasing your dreams isn’t selfish,
that you don’t have to choose between being a good parent,
and being a complete and amazing human being.
You are the one who taught me
that no matter how much you love someone, love really isn’t enough,
if two people don’t want the same things, aren’t both willing to sacrifice,
no amount of love is going to change that.
You are the one that taught me
that just because a relationship comes to its end
doesn’t mean you didn’t love deeply enough,
doesn’t mean you can’t still love, admire and respect the other person.
You are the one that helped me question my magical thinking;
destiny, fate, soul mates, and yes – even god,
I have learned to make sense of the world, of reality,
without all the fairy dust sprinkled on top.
You are the one who broke my heart into so many tiny pieces,
that I never thought I would be whole again,
and through that – I had to learn to love myself,
you are the one who taught me that only I could mend my broken heart….
